Selective Mutism Disorder of Children
Selective Mutism is an anxiety disorder where child consistently fails to speak and communicate properly in some special social situations such as school. Although they unable to speak or communicate in expected circumstances, they quite perform well in the comfortable, secure and relaxed situation. Selective mutism is comparatively rare and often seen in young children (Black & Grant, 2014). If the cause of failure is the lack of knowledge or less skill in required language and for autism spectrum disorder, schizophrenia, or another type of psychological disorder, would not count as selective mutism.
Symptoms of Selective Mutism disorder
- Continuously failure to speak in a specific social situation in which there is an expectation for speaking (e.g., at school) despite speaking in other situations.
- The trouble interferes their learnings or institutional achievement or with social communication.
- The duration of the disturbance is at least 1 month (not limited to the first month of school).
- The failure to speak is not for lack of knowledge, or comfort with, the spoken language required in the social situation.
- The disturbance is not better explained by a communication disorder such as childhood- onset fluency disorder and does not occur exclusively during the course of autism spectrum disorder, schizophrenia, or another psychotic disorder ( DSM-5).
সিলেকটিভ মিউটিজম
সিলেকটিভ মিউটিজম হল শিশুদের এক ধরনের দুশ্চিন্তামুলক/উদ্বিগ্নতা জনিত মানসিক ব্যাধি। আক্রান্ত শিশুরা স্কুলে কিংবা বিশেষ সামাজিক পরিস্থিতিতে কথা বলতে ও তথ্য আদান প্রদানে অক্ষমতা প্রকাশ করে যদিও আক্রান্ত শিশুরা নিজ বাড়িতে কিংবা সুপরিচিত অন্যান্য পরিস্থিতিতে স্বাভাবিক কথা বার্তা ও যোগাযোগ করতে সক্ষম।
কিভাবে বুঝবেন আপনার শিশু সিলেকটিভ মিউটিজম এ আক্রান্ত
- স্কুল কিংবা সামাজিক পরিস্থিতিতে প্রতি নিয়মিত কথা ও যোগাযোগ অক্ষম হলে।
- সমস্যাটি শিশুর স্কুলের পড়াশুনা, নিজ ও সামাজিক জীবন যাপন ব্যাহত করলে।
- সমস্যাটি যদি ১ মাসের অধিক সময় ধরে নিয়মিত দেখা যায়।
- তবে ভাষার উপর দক্ষতা কম কিংবা জ্ঞানের স্বল্পতার কারনে কথা ও যোগাযোগ অক্ষম হলে এবং অটিজম, সিজফ্রেনিয়া কিংবা অন্য কোন মানসিক ব্যাধি থাকলে তা সিলেকটিভ মিউটিজম এর আওতায় পরবে না।
